Minutes of a Christmas Dinner meeting of the Society of OAFs held on 19 December 2018 at 1830 at University House
Present: OAFs Barlow, Falvey, Hickey, Lee Dow, Larkins, Tjia, Topp and Wood
Apologies: OAFs Beard and White
Minutes of previous meeting: Not mentioned, therefore accepted.
Agenda: There being no agenda other than enjoying and end-of-year dinner together, important matters were embedded within the table hubbub as paraphrased below:
- Assembling punctually OAFs were welcomed with champagne (see following item) with which absent OAFs Beard and White were toasted, and OAF Wood was congratulated on his ‘all clear’ received from a check-up that day.
- Champagne was provided by Prof Deli Chen (from China) – one bottle which was mistaken as two. The token was appreciated and thanks ethereally conveyed to Deli. A proposal was put that OAFs confirm their policy of absolute transparency and acknowledge that bribes gifts are welcomed from future prospective OAFs. Ensuing discussion suggested that such largesse should not simply be ‘welcomed’ but ‘obligatory’. The outcome was unclear.
- Moving to the table, each OAF received a package, presumably left by SC, which they proceeded to open revealing the inaugural commemorative tribute, the ‘OAFmug’ as per the image:
- The matter of the AgriFood Award initiated by OAFs not being given the prominence expected by the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and its sponsor not being content, was raised and it was resolved to call for a meeting with the ATSE President and CEO in February 2019 involving three OAFs and the sponsor.
- The subject of OAFs meeting at venues other than University House was raised in association with a comment about the cuisine. Attention was drawn to the words on the SOAF letterhead insignia as a summary of the Constitution indicating that any venue is acceptable. Various urban and rural options were tossed around.
- The OAFish Award was clarified as relating to ‘an event resulting from not acting one’s age’ and therefore excluding any age-related complaints.
- Other elements of the wide-ranging discussion included: the potential benefits of boys entering school a year later than girls, and the effects on some OAFs who had been schooled among older peers; erstwhile colleagues including a figure from ILFR days; possible new SOAF initiatives, and various other important matters.
- The occasion was duly recorded photographically as follows:

- The meal cost $60- per OAF, a frugal outcome thanks to the donated champagne.
Date of next gathering: To be determined by the Secretary

OAF Larkins has recently returned from two weeks of ‘grandparenting’ in Ballina where it rained most of the time. He continues to reflect on the imbalance of male and female students at home and from overseas and the reasons why this imbalance is occurring (Secretary’s note – perhaps this will cease to be an issue as we move into the era of gender neutrality when individuals will not even be assigned a gender at birth).
OAF Falvey continues to travel extensively, this time to Africa to chair the board of ILRI in Nairobi. He recently attended a reunion of MPW colleagues and has now retired from the Hassad board.
OAF Lee Dow attended a recent conference of regional universities and spoke of Cathy McGowan’s (Federal MP for Indie) idea of a commission for regional universities.
OAF White has continued to work on the book ‘Healthy soils for healthy vines’, which is almost finished. He has also been involved in some consulting work for vineyards.
OAF Wood expounded on his entrepreneurial activities in the world of truffle growing, developing a range of truffle products and selling them.

OAF White has recently returned from a vacation in Noosaville, Queensland. He and Annette drove up and back, noting the effect of the ongoing drought on the countryside in NSW and Qld. Contrary to first impressions, he now thinks that in his book ‘Call of the Reed Warbler’, Charles Massy has a valid point to make about the failures of agricultural land management in eastern Australia – more of this anon.
